One Piece (jap. ワンピース) is a Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. The story follows the adventures of Monkey D. Luffy, a young man whose body gains the properties of rubber after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. With his diverse crew of pirates, named the Straw Hat Pirates, Luffy explores the Grand Line in search of the world’s ultimate treasure known as “One Piece” in order to become the next Pirate King. Along the way, they battle powerful enemies and make new allies while searching for hidden treasures, uncovering dark mysteries and battling against powerful forces.
The manga has been published since 1997 in Shonen Jump, a Japanese manga magazine published by Shueisha. There is also a related anime series created by Toei Animation.
Since June 2012, the One Piece manga has also been published as a digitally colored e-manga, which costs 500 yen per issue. To date, volumes 1 – 98 are available in the colorized version (as of May 2022). Just a little later, in September 2012, Shueisha began publishing One Piece as a simple e-manga in black and white as well, which at 399 yen per volume (the Kindle edition costs 400 yen) is even slightly cheaper than the print edition, which currently costs 432 yen. Since the release of volume 76, the digital edition is published just one month later than the print edition.
Furthermore, the first 597 chapters were compiled into logs that contain almost all of the color pages that were also printed in the Shonen Jump magazine.
Since June 14, 2015, there has been a One Piece app for iOS and Android that, in addition to news and specials about One Piece, also offers One Piece chapters in color starting with chapter 1 for free at regular intervals.
Currently, the manga has 104+ volumes and is still ongoing. The list of volumes can be found in the article Manga Volumes.
One Piece and manga is usually drawn in manuscript format on JIS B4 (257 mm × 364 mm) paper. The Weekly Shonen Jump magazine has a size of JIS B5 (182 mm × 257 mm) while the anthologies, called Tankōbon, claim the JIS B6 format (128 mm × 182 mm). In this respect, the manuscript pages are shrunk by half for the magazine and again by half for the anthologies.

Legend
- Legend: JC=Shonen Jump Cast. These are covers featuring a potpourri of characters from all or several WSJ series.
- [*]Is not the same as the calendar year. For weekly manga magazines such as the Shonen Jump, the year does not begin on January 1. Issue #1 is usually published as early as the first Monday in December. Therefore, this listing refers to the year in Jump issues.
- [**] All cover appearances are counted, including WSJ cast covers, which often exist for the four double issues.
- [***] Because of 4 double issues, there are the equivalent of 48 individual magazine issues at 52 calendar weeks per year. However, in 2004, 2009 and 2015 there were 49(#01-#53) and in 2011 there were only 47 (#01-#51) issues within a Jump year. In 2020, there was an unplanned hiatus of the magazine in April due to the COVID-19 pandemic, so there were a total of 5 double issues to make up for the hiatus.

Circulation and sales figures
One Piece is the best-selling manga of all time, with over 307,440,000 copies sold in Japan (as of February 2014, Shueisha Media guide), ahead of “Dragon Ball” (159,500,000 copies sold in Japan alone, as of February 2014). It is also the manga that sold 100,000,000 copies the fastest, as well as the first and only one to date to sell over 200,000,000 copies. Volume 66 holds the record for sales of 2,275,080 copies in the first week of sales.
In 2002, Volume 26 broke the record for the number of first printings of a manga, which had previously been held by “Slam Dunk”, with 2,600,000 copies. Finally, in 2010, Volume 57, with 3,000,000 copies, broke the first-run record for all books in Japan, previously held by Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (2,900,000 copies). After that, every volume except volume 62 and volume 65 had set a new record. Since volume 64, One Piece has had a first printing of 4,000,000 copies, which has only been surpassed by volume 67, which holds the first printing record with 4,050,000 copies. Im the digitization of the industry and the steady expansion of e-manga distribution channels as a complementary offering, Volume 77 received a first printing of 3,800,000 copies. The digital editions are still released after the print editions, but Shueisha has announced that it will focus more on the distribution of digital content, which means that Volume 77 will be available digitally just one month later.
With the release of Volume 76 (December 2014), a total of 380 million One Piece copies have been printed worldwide. Of these, 320 million have gone through printing in Japan alone and 60 million in 35 other countries. Volume 1 received its 112th printing in 2012.
With the release of Volume 103 on August 04, 2022, the official Twitter channel announced that a total of over 500 million copies have now been printed. To be more precise, there are 516,566,000, of which 416,566,000 are in Japan alone. The remaining 100 million are distributed among 60 other countries around the world.
Entry in the Guinness Book of Records

On June 15, 2015, One Piece received an entry in the Guinness Book of Records for the “most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author”: The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author is One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda (Japan) with 320,866,000, copies printed and circulated from December 1997 to December 2014. (Original wording of the certificate) (One-Piece.com). The award ceremony was held at the theme park in Tokyo Tower, and Eiichiro Oda was not personally present at the award ceremony, so Yoshihisa Heishi, the editor-in-chief of Shonen Jump, accepted the certificate in his place. However, Oda commented in writing on his award and dedicated an illustration to the day (see right):
“Thank you so much for entering the Guinness Book of Records. Being involved with manga is a great way to spend your time, but when messages reach me like, ‘Through One Piece, I made friends,’ or, ‘Through One Piece, I found the love of my life,’ it makes me very happy. I think this record can bring the same number of people together. I’ll never forget all the pioneers and supporters of the manga world, my colleagues I’ve had the privilege to work with, and my readers. From now on, I want to continue drawing work that lives up to this record.”(ANN/OPP).
Eiichiro Oda
In Shonen Jump issue 30/2015, which celebrated this award with the corresponding illustration on the cover, it was calculated and colored that if these anthologies were lined up side by side, they would reach a distance of 56,472 kilometers. Stacked, these would give a height of 5,132 kilometers.
With the publication of Volume 103 in August 2022 and a circulation of over 500 million copies worldwide, the certificate for the Guinness Book of Records was also renewed. The edition refers to Japan. On the certificate, the text has been updated accordingly to “The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author is One Piece created by Eiichiro Oda (Japan) with 416,566,000 copies printed and circulated from December 1997 to July 2022.”
Logs & Boxsets
Logs
Large-format magazines, known as logs, have been published in Japan since 2005. Compared to the manga volumes, the individual logs contain significantly more chapters (30 chapters on average), the format corresponds to that of the Shonen Jump, and they include extras such as posters or postcards. Due to the comparatively cheap paper quality and the significantly more chapters contained in a log, fans in Japan can purchase the series at a lower price. Currently, a total of 28 logs with the first 800 chapters have been released in Japan. (Status: October 2020)
Collector’s Box
Since 2020, collectible boxes have also been available for purchase in Japan. Marketed as box sets, collectible boxes contain a set number of regular manga volumes for them.
Shueisha Jump Remix
Shueisha Jump Remix (jap. 集英社ジャンプリミックス, Shueisha Janpu Rimikkusu), or SJR for short, is an exclusive series of convenience store manga volumes in Japan published by Shueisha. They are very similar to Logs in that due to lower paper quality, readers get more chapters for less money. Having already published titles such as Naruto, Bleach and Dragon Ball via Shueisha Jump Remix, One Piece followed on September 3, 2021, marking the label’s 20th anniversary and the release of the manga’s 100th volume. On average, an issue contains over 20 chapters. The One Piece Jump Remix edition initially goes up to chapter 597, the last chapter before the time jump, and includes 24 volumes. The titles of the volumes are themed “VS” and are all based on an opponent. The volumes are released every two weeks.
Eiichiro Oda designed Shueisha Jump Remix’s new 20th anniversary mascot, “Shachix,” which is featured on the covers.
